Oct.15, 1932 game 1 MAPLE LEAFS BEAT BUFFALO BOWMANS INDIANS LOSE FIRST OF LACROSSE PLAY-OF GAMES BY SCORE OF 15-6 With the largest crowd of the season in attendance, the Maple Leafs defeated the Bufalo Bowmans here on Saturday night by 15 to 6, and thus won the first game of the Professional Lacrosse League championship series. The locals, who gained a first-goal lead in the first quarter, were masters of the situation throughout, and the visiting Indians could never get into their proper stride. It was the most decisive defeat sustained by the Bowmans this season, but they only had themselves to blame in that they had only seven men in uniform when the game began. The others had been delayed owing to motor trouble. The Leafs were quick to sense their advantage, and led by 'Bucko' McDonald they set a dazzling pace which their opponents could not match. McDONALD OUTSTANDING McDonald was the most successful attacker of the game,he scored six goals and assisted in two others. It was the best showing he has made since he joined the professionals, and this is saying a lot in view of the fact that he generaly stars. Oddie Core was another who was highly efective. He worked well with McDonald and was credited with seven scoring points. The Leafs five goals in the opening session robbed the tilt of much of the attractiveness, and interest was not as keen as usual. Bowmans rallied to start the next quarter, and managed to score two goals, but after this splurge they weakened perceptibly, and the Leafs drew away to lead by 5 to 2 at the intermission. The visitors scored the first goal in the third period, but it was only a flash in the pan, and the Leafs soon rattled two more into the twine. The next four counters were equally divided, and the rest interval found the locals in the lead by 12 to 5. In the final dash the Leafs tacked on three morth, while the Indians were held to one. Bil McArthur turned in a great game in front of the local net and he deprived the Bowmans sharpshooters of goals they appeared to be entitled to. The visitors made many spectacular atacks, but most of the time they found McArthur barring the way. Goalkeeper Garlow didn't have much chance to stop the shots aimed at himby the locals. In fact, invariably found himself all alone to make the stops. The Leafs went in close repeatedly and tok their own good time before firing. Garlow, probably incensed because of his teammates' failure to get more goals, made an attack himself late in the final quarter, but McArthur stopped the ball and tossed it far up the floor to Zimmer, who scored with ease, much to the chagrin of Garlow. INDIANS STILL CONFIDENT The game, because of the Leafs' long lead, lacked the thrills that have featured others here this year. The Indians were battling in a losing cause., but 'Scotty' Martin and his mates say that it will a different story when the teams meet again next Saturday night. Martin thinks that his braves are a better team than the Leafs and he predicts that they wil prove it before the series is concluded.
