Taken from the Winnipeg Tribune from 1938 LOCAL LACROSSE TEAMS SCRATCHED FROM FINALS Failure of the Manitoba Lacrosse Association to effect a financial compromise with its parent body, the C.L.A., today witnessed official abandonment of preparations for Manitoba participation in national senior and junior playdowns. At the same time, local officials adviced E.J. Dopp, secretary of the C.L.A., that, his refusal to accept Manitba's entry for the junior playdowns on the same terms as last year means "the death knell of lacrosse in Manitoba." Junking of playoff plans followed a weekend of bickering between Manitoba and national officials over financial arrangements for a series here. The C.L.A., demanding a certified cheque for $300 as guarantee from each of its branches competing in the junior series, was unwilling to soften its terms for Manitoba. A counter proposal by the M.L.A. that the visiting team should receive net proceeds from a series here was refused. Unable to attract a single gesture of compromise from either Mr. Dopp or M.E.F. Kelley, president of the C.L.A., Harry LeLeu, president of the Manitoba branch, announced abandonment of plans for Manitoba's participation in senior as well as junior playdowns. He wired Mr.Dopp: "Unless the C.L.A. accepts our entry for Junior playdowns we are not prepared to compete in Mann Cup series. No junior series means death knell of lacrosse in Manitoba." Mr. Leleu's expression of the fate awaiting lacrosse locally since the playdown bubble exploded was firmly and dolefully seconded, by leaders of clubs which competed in the provincial playoffs. Death for game? "It's no longer a question of maintaining public interest if we cannot enter interprovincial playdowns this season," said George Neil, manager and secretary-treasurer of the senior Wellington, "our trouble will be to keep even the players in the game." 1938 MINTO CUP - game 1 - October 3, 1938 Eastern All-Stars (Mimico) 16, Western All-Stars (Richomod-Pont Grey) 18 game 2 - October 6, 1938 Eastern All-Stars (Mimico) 13, Western All-Stars (Richmond-Pont Grey) 11 game 3 - October 8, 1938 Eastern All-Stars (Mimico) 21, Western All-Stars (Richomnd-Pont Grey) 15 game 4 - October 10, 1938 Eastern All-Stars (Mimico) 16, Western All-Stars (Richmond-Pont Grey) 10 1938 MIMICO MOUNTAINEERS JUNIOR A MINTO CUP ------------------------ --------- GP GO ASS PTS PIM -- --- --- --- --- Jack "Fireman" Williams 4 19 1 20 6 Benny Harris 4 12 6 18 10 Archie Dixon 4 11 1 12 6 Tony Worsencroft 4 5 5 10 18 Lloyd "Toad" Gair 4 4 5 9 14 Al Jeffries 4 3 6 9 2 Marlowe Woods 3 5 3 8 6 Fred Perry 4 4 1 5 0 Doug Gillespie 3 3 2 5 2 Doug Cove 4 0 2 2 4 Joe Kozub 1 0 1 1 4 Bud Lee 3 0 1 1 0 Ray Mortimer 1 0 0 0 0 Johnson 2 0 0 0 0 John Crowe 4 0 0 0 4 Len Woods 4 0 0 0 0 Goaltending GP SHOTS SS GA SH.SAVE AVE.
